On Bitul Z’man

These are days that find me talking to myself, and not always in a charming or funny way, though nor is it mournful. It might be repeating words aloud while sitting in my little room or pacing the dark hallway when my wife is away. There is a Hebrew term I’ve learned, bitul z’man (ביטול זמן), which translates literally to “cancel time,” or “destroy time.”

To speak is to act. Language is action and language is the reason we’re here. These are days that find me pacing, speaking this Hebrew term and acting out what it names.
